Candle in the Dark Campaign Diary - Session 15: The Vaults Pt 1

The Cast:

  • Enid, half-elf cleric of Bahamut
  • Nashgar, dragonborn paladin of Bahamut
  • Leilua, tiefling warlock
  • Corrin, halfling barbarian

When last we left our intrepid heroes, they had entered the Vaults below Gardmore Abbey in hopes of finding a way into the wizard's tower.  Warned by Sir Oakley about a dangerous presence within the Vaults, the heroes cautiously navigate the ancient dungeon.  The walls and ceiling of the dungeon are carved with archaic symbols and glyphs.  The initial rooms contain a number of crates and statues which the abbey apparently stored here and forgot about.  One room contained a teleportation circle that appeared to be active.  The way into the rest of the dungeon was blocked by iron doors, which required brute strength to break through.  Beyond the iron doors was a 2 level room, the bottom level of which had a pile of what appeared to be minotaur bones.  The top level had another circle, but this one was made of rune-engraved gold.

As the group explored, they spotted a strange looking kobold that ran out of the room into another deeper into the dungeon.  The group follow the kobold and find a large chamber with a raised level containing a glowing blue orb on a golden pedestal, guarded by four kobolds, and several other kobolds had weapons drawn.  Nashgar-not Gashnar instructed the kobolds to repent and follow Bahamut, but the kobolds all strangely answered in unison stating that their master was something called Mekkalath.  As soon as Nashgar stepped on to the steps leading up to the orbs, the kobolds attacked.  The heroes fought, but the kobolds had trapped the room and gouts of flames spewed from the walls when Enid moved in.  Corrin charged headlong into the fray but the kobolds piled on him, inflicting some horrible wounds, including severing part of one foot.  The group eventually overpowered the kobolds, but a couple escaped into an adjoining room behind another iron door.

Before pursuing, the group study the glowing orb and surmise that it is one of the legendary Orbs of the Dragonkind, which confirms what the Bahamut priest told them in Fallcrest.  They place the hovering orb into a backpack and then search the rest of the room, finding another teleportation circle, but nothing else of value.  They then go after the two kobolds that escaped.  Nashgar discovers that he can open the iron doors by channeling divine power into them, and when this iron door opens, the chamber beyond reveals a blue dragon; mouth open and lightning crackling about it's maw.

End of session.
